Used for prevention and treatment of damages due to faulty or deficient protein metabolism in chronic kidney disease when combined with a low-protein diet (e.g., ≤40 g protein per day in adults). This is especially in cases where kidney filtration (GFR) is reduced (commonly <25 mL/min).

• Provides essential amino acids without adding much nitrogen load.

• Keto-analogues are converted to amino acids in the body using nitrogen recycled from nonessential amino acids.

• This reduces urea formation and the accumulation of uremic toxins.

• Helps slow progression of kidney disease, reduce uraemic symptoms, and delay the need for dialysis when used with dietary protein restriction.

• Route: Oral (by mouth).

• Typical adult dosing: 4–8 tablets three times daily during meals (unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor).

• Tablets should be swallowed whole – do not chew.

• The regimen is usually continued during the period of reduced kidney function.
